Daryl,
If removing your ballast gave you a really dramatic performance
improvement, it is probably sized incorrectly, also, hooking a distribution
transformer up directly like that would certainly flip the breaker without
breaking a sweat, those suckers draw hundreds of Amps ballasted. I might
also add, that it is possible you hooked your welding ballast up wrong, did
you have the plug in series with your "pig" primary and the welders
secondary shorted, or did you feed the pig off of the secondary outputs (the
cables). We need more details, stuff like how much does your pig weigh,
what kind of welder was it, etc. I'm sure the nice folks on the list will
help you figure this out.
