The cost of the driver boards and (usually) the voltage doubler board is the 
same regardless of how large or small a coil you wish to make.

If you are using 300 Amp to 600 Amp IGBTs, the driver board contains 
identical parts --- the cost escalates in accordance in which IGBT you 
select and this is based on the expected peak surge currents in your primary 
drive circuit.

This, coupled with the fact the potential developed across an air core 
solenoid is -L x dI/dt, presents a good case to use a larger sec coilform 
than a small one.

Unless, of course you want maximum portability or are severely space 
limited.

If not, go for a 8 to 12 inch dia. sec and 5-8 kVA input which gives a 
healthy 10 ft spark output.

BTW, Bart Anderson's free JAVATC does a great job in DRSSTC design --- it 
takes all the hard work out of it.  It's on Bart's website.
