John,
     It was a 120 BPS sync rotary, with a series quenching gap, and a small blower fan.  I did a few long runs that night, and the contacts in the quenching gap (steel acorn nuts) burned all the way through to the brass bolts underneath (this was with a ballast), so I could see that it might be power arcing, I was not watching the gap during the tests, my cousin was, and he wouldn't know what to look for.
