[TCML] Calculate Output Voltage
Hello,
I was wondering if anybody knows of a formula to calculate the
secondary voltage of a Tesla coil. The only one I thought to try was
Vout=(Vin/Pri)Sec which should work with a standard transformer if Vout
is voltage out, Vin is volts in, Pri is primary turns, and Sec is
secondary turns. However, this seems to be returning an extremely high
voltage.
Thanks,
Clive

Generally accepted historical equation (100% effiiciency assumed) is
Vs ~ Vp *sqrt(Ls/Lp) where L is same base unit of inductance (uH, mH, H),
and voltage values are rms equivalents.
Example: If Vp = 20kV, Lp = 20uH (0.02mH), Ls = 20mH
then Vs (predicted) ~ 20*sqrt(1000); = 20 * 31.6 = 632kV
Actual output is on order of 40-60% of predicted, based on charge
transfer speed, coupling coefficient, top load radius of curvature,
power capability (Cp, SG BPS, kVin) and probably many more
variables that I've overlooked.
