Subject: copper plated tungsten rods
Hey all,
Knowing that the skin effect causes most of the current to travel on
the outside of conductors, would it be worth my trouble to copper plate the
tungsten rods in my spark gap? I have a few ideas of how to do this, but I
am not sure if it would be worth my time. Thanks.
Scott Bogard.
Hi Scott,
IMO, No. The copper plating would burn off rather quickly. The purpose of
using tungsten is that it does not burn off like copper. Tungsten coated copper
would do more good than copper coated tungsten, but neither is really worth
the trouble. A copper jacketed tungsten rod, with copper starting a ways back
from the tip might have useful electrical and thermal properties.
