Here's a tip on end-fittings:  A Cambro # RFSCWC12 food-service 
bucket-lid (transparent, made from butyrate I think) is an exact fit 
over a White Cap brand 12" sonotube.  Makes a very nice closure, and you 
can drill a central hole for an axle, for turning the whole thing while 
winding.  And as I recall, the # RFSC12, made from polyethylene, 
apparently, and just a bit smaller, is good for use as an internal 
stiffener, with perhaps a little peripheral trimming--I can't remember.
