It was 4.125 x 0.125 inch thick PVC from the hardware store...  A 
common cheap PVC tubing...

   Fine.  I use that cheap stuff for all sorts of things (my TC's 
have all been on shellacked mailing tubes of sizes from 1-1/2 to 5 
inches, but now PVC pipe is cheaper than the shellac to stiffen the 
mailing tube).
