    Might, but not as well as eithre a proper 'point
    and jewel' bearing or its near cousin, 'hardened steel
    point and beveled cup.  Ball pen ball is going to
    be draggy, due to the ink and the ball being not as sharp
    as a point.  For 'light' loads, a sharp point (centerpunch
    point, hardened steel, etc, would be ideal) in a good,
    clean, slightly oversize (to assure point contact)
    angled opening is hard to beat.  (On mine, i simply
    'centerpunched' a beveled dimple: the idea is to get
    as close as possible to single point, rather than a
    'rubbing circle'.)

    Random thought, for comment:
     If extending the shaft 'up and away' to clear toroid,
     would it help if 'shaft (surrounding shroud, actually)
     were 'large diameter' (left vague) to reduce corona
     from support/raise voltage to spinner?
