Re: Concentric spheres- an hypothesis

Original poster: "resonance" <resonance@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Actually a lot of work has been done on this very subject by Prof. R.G. Herb, Univ. of Wis. alumnus, now the Chairman of National Electrostatics in Middleton, WI.

Prof. Herb published several papers on on the use of concentric shells in very large Van de Graaff generators, many of which were used at Sandia National Labs during the Manhattan Project (building the first A-bomb). I don't know how many of them are still classified though.

Concentric shells Van de Graaffs allowed better control of the powerful electrostatic fields in tandem VDGRFs. The physics is well understood in this area of research.

David Thomson's mention of John Freau's concentric spheres,
in "Magnetically controlled spark gap for Wireless Transmitter"
posted yesterday, piqued my interest. In case it hasn't been
analyzed before, here's Herrick's Hypothesis as to how they work:

Ken,

The concentric sphere idea was tested by John Cooper and is
discussed at his website. I never tried such a method, and I
have no association with that interesting experiment. J.C. does
show one of my 6" copper seamless toroids at his website, so
that may have led to some confusion. I no longer offer that type
of toroid. From time to time I will make some 4" x 13" spun
aluminum toroids, but no other sizes. If anyone needs a 4 x 13 toroid,
please e-mail me directly at any time so I can plan.
