some form of very high input impedance Efield probe at some distance, where it won't get zapped by a stray spark.
Put a known voltage on the VDG (with a wire up the column), e.g. 1000 V. Measure the reading on your Efield probe. Run the VDG, measure the reading. Divide by the 1000V reading to get kV.
The challenge is that any sort of load on the VDG will reduce the voltage.
