Re: [TCML] Q,,question

Hi Dr. Res,

I think Adam was being humorously sarcastic....

It seems you are completely missing the point.

The point is: Why bother with ribbon when copper tubing works better. No additional soldering necessary. Easy to install and easy to tap.

Heck, once you've gone to all the trouble to split and
flatten the tubing, it would be "simple" to solder a
AWG 10 or 8 solid wire to each edge, to avoid corona.

If you go thru all this trouble producing a copper
ribbon you run into
another, and more serious, problem --- corona.

The edge of the ribbon is very sharp as compared to
the well rounded surface
of a 3/4 inch ID copper tubing. This effect
produces a lot of corona
sweeping up the coil and will start to deteriorate
the coil especially in
high performance coils that have a spark length = or
greater than the sec
coil length.

If you use a copper ribbon and shoot some B&W 30 sec
time lapse photos you
will see a large amount of nearly invisible (to the
human eye) corona
sweeping up the coil. Try the same with copper
tubing and the effect is
very minimal.

I did this experiment near 40 years ago with an old
B&W camera, and never
again use copper ribbon for any of my primary coils.
 Copper tubing is the
best and certainly the most reliable solution.
