PVC can have tracking problems due to its ability to hold water molecules to
its surface. Acrylic tube is perhaps a better choice, but expensive. I
favor winding the primary on some 1/4 inch dia. G-10 rods (usually 8-10
pieces in a circle) and then using a "shield" consisting of 6-8 wraps of
1/8th inch thick polystyrene. The PS is cut into 48 inch long pieces for
nearly continuous wrap. You can make a seam if your overlap approx 4-5
inches. Go about 1/2 way up the coil with this shield. PS does a great job
of holding off RF currents that tend to track even further than 60 Hz AC
currents. VTTCs usually operate at higher frequencies than classic RSG
coils which helps exacerbate the tracking problems.
If you haul your 833 coil to our fall TeslaFest I have a 3,000 Volt, 1200 mA
plate transformer we could try on your coil. That should provide all the
drive you need to get a "full power" operation, at least for testing.
