I guess I could actually do this.   I have two samples from 
diamondground that are 3/16th diameter.   I have not cut the 
thoriated one in half yet, but could do this today.

    I wonder if anyone here has ever set up short gaps with thoriated
and plain tungsten (same geometry of course) and measured the actual
difference in breakdown voltage?
