Is it possible to run STR rather than LTR to protect the transformer and

Justin,
Yes, pigs and PT's are often run STR. However it should be realized
that STR, resonant, and LTR have different meanings for Pigs and
PT's than they do for NST's. This is because NST's are current
limited, thus a particular cap value will be either STR, LTR, or
resonant. However with pigs and PT which are not current
limited, a particular cap value can run either STR, resonant,
or LTR, *depending on how the ballast is adjusted*. Often
this important point is not mentioned. This ballast adjustment
will radically affect the spark length of course. If the pig or
PT is run at it's current and power ratings, then the STR,
resonant, or LTR designations will have more meaning.
This is because the STR, resonant and LTR designations
are based on using the pig or PT at it's rated current and
power. If you run it at either a higher or lower power, it
will change things. But yes, Pig's and PT's are often run
STR because otherwise rather large caps are needed.
When running STR, use an ARSG for easiest adjustment
rather than any type of sync rotary.
