important is a matter of perception. Originally the coil was invented to transfer electricity without wires... but that was shot down cause the "provider" wouldnt be able to charge the customer :) and by the way a properly tuned coil for electrical transfer ( in Tesla's true application) would have produced very little "sparks"...

Visual effect fireworks is a multi billion dollar business and all they do is shoot up into the air and go boom with all the pretty visuals but it seems important... or else it wouldnt be a multibillion $ business ;)

does anyone know of any real life applications of a tesla coil. I know of the "neat" tricks to do with it (i.e. lighting a lightbulb without wires), but not of any important things. Why would Tesla invent something that could only make sparks and nothing more?
