Secondary Self Arcing as 1st Harmonic?
Original poster: Harvey Norris <harvich@xxxxxxxxx>
Many years ago I built my first tesla coil on sonotube
using only some 270 turns of thicker 14 gauge wire.
The top terminal only made several inches of arcing.
This secondary used three spools of 500 ft of ordinary
14 gauge insulated wire, where these where soldered
between the 500 ft lengths wound onto the sonotube. In
playing around with the top wire, I accidently brought
it into vicinity of the bottom solder joint, where
then a more bolder white arcing issued from the top
terminal arcing to a point 1/3 of the active coil
length, for a secondary arcing to its own wire.
Since the arcing to itself consists of a closed loop,
which then comprises two thirds of the secondary,
wouldn't the remaining one third of the secondary wire
going to base or ground act as a resonator responding
to three times the designed frequency of the primary
LC circuit, or essentially responding as a 1st
harmonic of the intended frequency for the entire
length of secondary wire?
