My comments stem from having spent a GREAT amount of time and care
building two different rolled caps.  Both fail in short order, one of
them leaving an oily mess in my garage, and both much larger than a
comparable MMC.  I no longer recall the cost, but the amount of labor
was much greater for the rolled caps.  The second attempt was built in
two series'ed units and still failed - see

I like Chip's LCD vs. CRT analogy, except that CRT's don't typically
fail so much more often and leak.  I suspect if you took a poll on this
List for how many rolled cap vs. how many MMC failures have been seen,
you'd see what I'm saying.  I'm not saying that rolled caps can't be
made to work, just that odds of success are higher with MMC's.  If you
have a good method and succeed, then I applaud you.  Good luck with that
warranty thing...  I do like old-school technology.  And yes, I thought
my rolled caps looked very cool too!  But having to clean up the mess
changed my perspective.

I have not contemplated a rolled cap or MMC suitable for use with a pig
system.  I suspect that the labor, size, and cost comparisons scale
similarly, but my experience is strictly with smaller NST systems.

Dr. R - In my comment asking about the necessity of removing oil, I was
thinking about the dielectric in contact with the plates.  A conductive
salt film there wouldn't alter the field dynamics within the dielectric.
But I failed to consider if the salt/oil film was on the dielectric
margin, not in contact with the plates.  There it may increase the
likelihood of surface tracking from one side to the other.
