Thanks for the thought and the link. They can be installed with out a
special tool, if you use a drill bushing against the outer face of the
insert and then go through the bushing with an Allen bolt (or another
220Ksi bolt). The bolt then acts as the tooling to swedge the inert into
place. Do not try this with a standard hardware store bolt.

We use nutsterts all the time at work when we need to screw into sheet
metal.  I don't know if they can be installed without the special tool,
but it certainly isn't going to hurt to try (on scrap!).  See:

If you call the local office, I'm sure they can get a few samples.  
(there are aluminum ones, too)
