Hi,
I work in telecoms and I have experience of Compaq DL3** series with
dual proc. They are reliable but over priced without the support
(which is more important for running many systems). I would recommend
a good PC dual proc motherboard with 64Bit PCI and dual hard drives
and maybe a tape drive for back up. (+fastest CPUs and most RAM that
can be purchased). Asus are a good quality motherboard.
I'd run Linux with security patches (http://www.bastille-linux.org/)
and software raid. I'd also compile all the applications from source
starting with a minimal barebone installation (firewall/router
installation). I have been running this configuration for a number
years and the only problems I've had is application problems i.e. sql
injection i.e. no OS level attacks. IPtables should also be used to
lock down any open ports.
If you're worried about the DIY approach and would like support
Solaris is good, but you will still have the same hardening/lockdown
and applications issues. Solaris servers are good quality and value
and you can also run Linux on these.
Thanks
Chris R

Hi Chip,
Yes, check out HP. Servers are here in Ft Collins and different
division than PC's. You have choice of operating systems: Linux,
HPUX, etc. Problem with PC's is it's often hard to tell whether its
HW or SW and of course we know where the SW comes from.
