OK, so I guess Tesla was taken pretty seriously by his 
contemporaries. I think there were quite a few Thompsons around in 
physics at that time, but the one I meant was William Thompson, Lord 
Kelvin, the man who gave us degrees Kelvin. (OK, so they're not 
really degrees.) I think he is on record as making predictions just 
as far out as Tesla's: I seem to remember a quote printed somewhere 
in which he said X-rays would prove to be a hoax and heavier-than air 
flight would never be possible.
On an almost slightly relevant note- I live in Glasgow, where Kelvin 
did most of his work. There is a river called the Kelvin that flows 
through the city, and where it goes past the university there is a 
big statue of Lord Kelvin on one of the bridges. I never did figure 
out whether Lord Kelvin was named after the river, or the river after 
him. I guess it must be the former- the river was around long before he was.
