Re: Tesla Receiver Coil

So that, when I had explained this principle to Lord Kelvin, he
became absolutely convinced that I could do it...
OK, so I guess Tesla was taken pretty seriously by his
contemporaries. I think there were quite a few Thompsons around in
physics at that time, but the one I meant was William Thompson, Lord
Kelvin, the man who gave us degrees Kelvin. (OK, so they're not
really degrees.) I think he is on record as making predictions just
as far out as Tesla's: I seem to remember a quote printed somewhere
in which he said X-rays would prove to be a hoax and heavier-than air
flight would never be possible.
On an almost slightly relevant note- I live in Glasgow, where Kelvin
did most of his work. There is a river called the Kelvin that flows
through the city, and where it goes past the university there is a
big statue of Lord Kelvin on one of the bridges. I never did figure
out whether Lord Kelvin was named after the river, or the river after
him. I guess it must be the former- the river was around long before he was.
