Hi Miles,
I ran my mini-coil with a 7.5Kv 60ma GFI Franceformer, and every once in
a while I would have to hit the reset button, other than that it ran fine! I
got 22 inch streamers and according to John's length formula it should be 24
inches max. You should just try to run it as is. If you have any problems u
can decide to depot later. I depoted mine to boost the power and moved it to
my three inch coil. The GFI transformers have two secondarys and two
primaries. You have to wire the two primary coils in parallel and the
secondarys in series. The transformer looks like two mots welded together.
The coils are arranged secondary - primary - secondary - primary. On mine
the top secondary always got really hot. So I recommend that you saw the
weldings holding the top and bottom transformers together. You don't have to
saw more than 3/16"s, just enough to take them apart. After your done fasten
them together so it is, secondary - primary - primary - secondary. You will
also need to turn one of the secondarys on the E core upside down. Wire the
secondarys in series and the primaries in parallel; you may also remove a
few of the shunts for more power I think I toke out 5 and left in 10. After
I did that it ran much better and didn't even get worm. In fact its one of
my best performers, I get intense four foot streamers, and according to
johns spark length formula I should be getting 24 inches max from a 7.5KV
60mA transformer!!!!!!
Here is a link to my Webpage and my modified GFI Franceformer

Here are a few pictures of a 15/60 Franceformer I depoted and modified for
my Six inch coil, it now produces 15KV @ 200mA

Also check out Ross Overstreet's page he depoted a 12/60 Franceformer
http://hot-streamer.com/ross/projects/ac_coil/index_ac.htm
PS. You can use GFI transformers for Tesla coil duty, who ever said
they wouldn't work in a tank circuit never bothered to TRY IT!!!!
There is no reason to freak out and go nutz on ebay for a NST with
out a GFI circuit!
Peace,
Nolan Moore

Dear All,
I managed to scrounge up two Franceformer 12KV 60ma NSTs. One has a GFI,
and
the other is rated at 220 instead of 110 for the input. Well, well, well,
I
am thinking that I can just open up the tin and compare the two and figure
out...
a) how to remove the GFI
b) maybe how to readjust the 220 to 100, like some other transformers that
I
have
Cracking open the tins I see !!!!!!!!!
A huge black blob of indestructable rubbery plastic. Yuck!
:(
Is there some way to dissolve that horrible stuff so I can tinker with the
mechanism inside. Is the horrible black stuff a necessary insulator? Am I
just crazy, and there is no possible hope of ever "fixing" either of these
NSTs?
Sincerely,
Miles
