Malcolm,
What about non-magnetic stainless steel welding rods in 1/16" diameter? Is there some other reason not to use stainless steel? They are a lot more expensive than mild steel but they are also non-magnetic or do they need to be at least some magnetic? Thanks.

You've sort of answered your own question... the magnetic core in an inductor should be a magnetic material.

non-mag SS would be about the worst thing to use. High eddy current losses, and no inductance.

The ideal materials are ones that are magnetically soft (i.e. they stick to a magnet, but they don't retain any magnetism, and can't be "magnetized" permanently) AND have high resistivity.
