Congratulations to your success.
After a somehow strange start you managed to
achieve your goal, which is probably just a first
small step of a new hobby ;-)
I am not too sure how exactly you arranged your
strike rail. Usually you would mount it a bit above the outer
primary turn on a diamater that is a bit bigger that the
outer turn. Don't forget that your strikerail must not be
a closed loop as this will steal power from your system
and affect tuning.
For a statement regarding your repaired spot in the
secondary, I would need some pics. If it is done right,
there should be no problems unless you really want
to push things.
>From my experience it is not primarily the insulation you put
an the exposed segment of the wire but the shape of the joint
you made. If you have a big bump or even sharp endges at the
joint, this point will be prone to cause some unwanted breakout.
If the connection is smooth and narrow you are probably pretty safe.
In a small coil some racing sparks or similar stuff won't immidiately
kill the coil, just be sure to observe the coils behaviour and are ready
to turn the thing right off when you experience problems.
Do not make the typical beginners mistake to open your sparkgap to
wide and fry your NST. With the gap set reasonably close, you can
pretty carefree experiment with other parameters on your coil.
The airflow over the gap is a good point to start with, you will
probably see some improvement there, at least is will help to
cool the gap for longer runs ;-)
Good luck an safe coiling!
