I did that with my first coil (9/60 nst) and all i got was measly 16"
needle sparks because the bottom of the coil kept wanting to arc to the
pancake primary even tho it was raised 3". Grounding or at least a
counterpoise makes a huge difference (got 35" eventually before the nst
gave up the ghost).

Steve i dont groung my coils and sometimes ill hook a wire to a wood dowel
or pole and put it near the toroid so lightning will jump to that but im
not to sure either of those are to healthy for the coil.
