The scope is grounded for operator safety reasons. Don't attempt to float or use an isolation transformer with the scope. If you need to measure between two points within a DUT and neither is referenced to ground then you will need a differential amplifier in order to use your ground referenced scope. For that aged scope you can probably find a cheap differential amplifier on ebay or surplus.

Someone mentioned that I should remember the scope is grounded, I assume that it would be, as most things in metal boxes are, but how does this apply to it's use? (sorry if this is a dumb question)
