In Britain where I live, it's illegal to watch TV without paying about
$150/year for a "TV licence". So our state owned broadcasting corporation is
doing exactly that- charging us to receive their signals. If you are caught
watching TV without a licence you are liable for a fine of around $1500. Any
American reader probably thinks this is a sick joke but I swear on the deity
of your choice that it's true.
I imagine that a similar scheme would work for bullying people into paying
for wireless power. And wired power isn't really that hard to steal anyway.
The real reason why wireless power never caught on is probably that wires
are just more efficient and more practical.
