Re: Streamer length vs. power delivery time...
Original poster: Terry Fritz <teslalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Hi Steve,
ScanTesla came up with this as a match to your scope picture:
http://hot-streamer.com/temp/SteveWardTest2005-06-19.jpg
The values are below.
It says Vrail is 320V.
Lprimary = 17uH
Dwell = 125uS
The low rail voltage might be a little measurement error (or buss loading).
For Lprimary, are you counting all the wiring from your driver to the coil
too? That little extra wire would add a few uH.
Your scope display seems to be showing the start a bit late due to trigger
delay of about 20uS. The dwell time seems to be ~125uS
But other than a few small details, it is a pretty close match ;-))
You can probably tune your primary coil with a little less inductance
(15uH). The program thinks you are a little out of tune right
now. Primary current will be very sensitive to tuning. 13.22uH seems to
be a low primary current point. Streamer power would go from 2.63J to
4.51J but rise time slows from 93.4uS to 113.5uS... Hard to say how much
fine tweaking would change things at this point.
The coil is probably pretty sensitive to Lprimary and coupling, but you are
"really close" according to the program. Perhaps tuning of the primary
could be a bit higher, but the other stuff is just falling into measurement
error now.
I think the only new thing the program needs is a tabular output file
(selectable) as Malcolm suggested to make pretty graphs with ;-))
Then we can worry about streamer models... I think I'll let Gerry and All
figure that out ;-))
Cheers,
Terry

Terry and all else interested,
I got some scope shots of my coil running, you can see them here:

Allll the way at the bottom (that page is getting long!)
I found something interesting. At about half-spark length output, the
ringdown is just 1-1.5 cycles, but at full power, the ringdown is at
least 2 cycles. Maybe there is a "mismatch" from the streamers
growing. I found that changing the tuning only 1/6th of a turn caused
a 100A difference in primary current! (800A down to 700A). So perhaps
i was slightly off tune and not getting the best energy transfer due
to this. Or maybe i need to tweak my coupling some more.
I also got to run the coil without a breakout point, now that the
coupling is reasonable to deal with ;-). Very wild! but it started
to arc to the nearby flowers, so i stopped that before anyone found
out, hehe.
Have you got that streamer model figured out yet terry? ;-)
