Hi Steve,
Most of the pictures of these "pinwheels" that I've seen over
the last 50 years are on coils using a smallish spherical topload. If
you are using a toroid, perhaps it spreads the field a little too
much.The mass of the spinner and the smooth turning of the needle
bearing are both quite important.
