This scenario occurs often in Sci-Fi works. It is considered the most practical method of obtaining the desired results.

Here is an idea.  I am not sure what the "rules" are for "autonomous", but....

Suppose your lifter "only" had a secondary coil on-board for power.
It would float above a primary coil.  Sort of a floating Tesla coil secondary.

It would not contain it's own power in that case, but there would be no wire connection and it could fly forever. It would be vastly simpler!!!

Might be a stepping stone to getting to a truly autonomous lifter...
