Terry,
A very good and simple experiment for measuring the near and far
fields would be to simultaneously measure both the electrodynamic
field and the EM field with your old dual plane wave antenne while
increasing the distance. As the electric field decreases with the
inverse square of the distance and the EM field decreases with the
inverse of the distance the effects should be rather dramatic.
