Re: turnoid question

Toroid has better e-field control than a sphere (no sparks jumping off the top secondary turns). A sphere has more capacitance than a toroid with the same major diameter, but usually e-field control is more important than size.

Got to wondering something this afternoon. What are the real
advantages of a toroidal terminal vs a spherical one? Reason for asking
is that I saw some throwaway thin plastic salad bowls at work this
afternoon that were almost perfect hemispheres about 22" in diameter.
It would be quite easy to take a couple of those, cut off the rim, and
then cover them with some combination of heavy aluminum foil and
aluminum tape.
