The idea of the chicken wire is good. Its function is to attract the sparks, and provide a definite ground source, as opposed to hitting your wiring, ducts, etc. Use a good external building ground like an 8 ft copper-clad ground wire driven into the ground outside of your home with a short 2 AWG fine stranded welding cable feed wire.
