You've zapped your trade secret protection, so better get cracking on that
patent application so you don't time out on the one year after disclosure.

Interestingly, you could probably write an application for a bucket cap, as
you've described, and if you make it narrow enough, you could probably
successfully prosecute the application and get it granted.  Whether it would
be wise to spend the few thousand bucks is another story entirely.
