Certainly, but it is a bit tricky. Most truly ferrite toroids I find are
black, and maybe a little glossy. They have a slight powdery texture to
them. Powdered iron cores are painted colors(although ferrites could be I
guess, but most arent)and have a very matte or shiny finish on the paint.
Iron powder cores seem more delicate and brittle. If you recover a toroid
from somewhere and want my opinion on it, you can just email me the picture.
