I usually use a disc of cardboard taped to teh motor shaft.
Then I draw a white or black line across the disc.  This disc
is then viewed under fluorescent light.  It has to be the type
of light that uses an old type ballast, not the newer electronic
switching power supply type.  Some folks have great trouble
noticing if the motor is locked this way.  But once you learn
to see it you'll have no trouble.  The line will appear very blurred.
But you want to see a non-rotating blur, not a rotating blur.
Some folks build a type of strobe unit to see things better,
but it's not really needed.  I've posted these instructions about
100 times over the last couple years, so this is why I hadn't
included it again.  You can also hear when a motor is locked
or unlocked sometimes, because it makes an unsteady
hunting sound when unlocked (depending on how close
to sync-lock it is).
