That's not right. Something is wrong with your MOT
stack. It should be able to jump a gap without
actually touching...

It sounds like one or two of your MOTs is not properly
phased. Once you get a 4-pack properly wired, it will
jump about as wide a gap as your 9kv NST. When you do
strike an arc by hand, you will be able to draw out a
hot, buzzing flame several inches long. Keep fiddling
with your primary wiring until you get all 4 MOTs
pushing & pulling together.
