One of the "secrets" is the fact that John is using a huge dia. coilform.
If you recall, voltage multiplication (gain) is due to the inductance ratio
which goes up as the square of the radius of the coilform.  By using a large
dia. coilform John is seeing a large inductance ratio (Lsec/Lpri) which
helps to produce powerful outputs in TC circuits.
