I have put a 120 volt variac on half of the 240, and run the other leg of
the 240 straight to the transformer. When the power is applied, the voltage
starts at 120 volts, with the variac all the way down. This gives the user a
range of 120 to 240 volts to the transformer. Before I had a lucky find on a
240 volt variac that could handle 7va this method got me by. I used a 30 amp
0 to 120 volt variable transformer, and would use it again without
hesitation if the big powerstats were not available.
