Re: Using 240VAC on 140VAC Varic

Hey Dan, all, this reminds me of something I have been
meaning to ask for some time. I have a 40 amp 115V
Variac (nice old Theater dimmer) I rebuilt last Summer,
is about 80-90 lbs, has two 12 gage wires in parallel.
I also would like to know if I could run this on a 240
circuit? I can't remember how it works, but can you
derate the current by 1/2 if you double the voltage? Or
is it more complicated than that? I have a 15 amp 220V
variac and, believe me, the old Theater dimmer has many
times its mass in the core. Would think that this guy
would take a lot before it saturated?
Thanks,
David Trimmell
