Hi Dan,
Even 0.153 can be too much for some systems. The numbers were given for a
reference. Yes, 3/8" would likely be too close. Just something to follow up
with to get best performance out of your coil after you have fixed your
problem. I just noted the coupling because I had the info handy at the time.
As for the 4 stack, your question is best answered by others on the list
who have built 4 stacks MOTs. I run a pig and NST, but have built only one
dual MOT supply and rarely use it. The problem does seem sparkgap related.
Did you try narrowing the gap? It might be good to describe your circuit
for the list to take a look at. If anything is wrong (cap on the wrong side
of the gap) or whatever, the list will identify it.
Take care,
Bart B.

If I were to go about lowering the secondary to increase coupling,
I'd have to make my primary opening bigger to make sure of no arc overs.
Right? 0.375" above primary for a k of 0.153 would leave just 0.375" give
or take a little. Somehow I doubt that's sufficient space between coils.
I built my primary for my 3.5" coil but sense it fit closely enough to my
new coil diameter I used it. Otherwise I wouldn't have left myself so
little space. The caps were about 47nF. As for the 4 stack, do they have
to have a center tap ground to work properly? Am I on the right track on
all the figuring or am I missing something? Please let me know, Thanks
for the help so far.
