I have to agree with Gary, it sounds like the gap is open too far. I
had the same problem with my MOTs; they would power arc or not fire at
all. I went to a sucker gap with extra holes drilled in it to clear the
ions. (http://home.comcast.net/~rburney6/detailpictures/sucker.jpg), and
raised my voltage from the MOTs with a voltage doubler. See here for

Sounds like the gap is too far apart. Try closing the gap some. Dont
let
the transformers hum for very long. Wood is probably OK unless it is
very
humid or green.
