Terry,
Why not use one of the many monolithic IC frequency/pulse width
generators. They're analog, simple to use and best of all,
inexpensive. For a few bucks, 555's will be a thing of the past. You can
also modulate them. Parts count will decrease. I've used them for years
and they work great with your low Z amp. You could get really
crazy and control them with a pic-DAC and fiberoptics.
