Hi Godfrey,
     This is often a shock to many young men, but size isn't everything. 
;-)) In coils used for exhibits, demonstrations, and research, rock-solid 
dependability and longevity are more important than maximizing streamer 
size. Back when Tesla coils were used to power other devices like Xray 
machines, they were even designed not to arc at all!
Materials used today do have much improved electrical properties.
