Generators are still treated as mains supply is. I asked about this.

Agreed about the safety aspect of the stepped up 240V being just as unsafe.
The current laws do not really cover hobbyist situations.  I certainly feel
more comfortable with my home wired control box with residual current
devices before and after the variac and selectable current cutouts than with
a conventional enclosed commercial variac on its own.
