Re: Marx on "Myth Busters"

Well, he's half right :)

It never happened to Dr. R. It happened to one of our members.

Me.

While testing the Mercury coil for a private demonstration at Geekhouse
about 2 summers ago the operator (who had through knowledge of coils,
coiling safety, etc, he was just an a$$h-at-le) I was tuning the coil with
him. It's a 6" coil capable of 6-8' arcs running a SRSG and Geek Group
MMC's off of a farm of 15/60's. He was on the control cabinet.

He gave me a "SAFE" command and I moved in to adjust a tap point on the
primary. As I stepped away I stood up and HARRRRRANNNNNGGGG I caught about
a half-second of a direct strike to the right side of my nose, I felt it go
out my right big toe.

He toggled the power "as a joke because I "looked" like I was in a safe
position". There was a half-dozen people there who knew nothing about coils
so I refrained from beating the living p*** out of him at that moment. I
was shaking so bad I was having enough of a hard tie trying to play it off
because of the newbs there.

It hurt in a way I cannot possibly describe, and I'm a guy who has spent a
great deal of his life healing from something or other. The gap was spun up
to 360bps and I could feel every bang for that half-second, which felt like
an hour. I had to take a few seconds just to make sure I wasn't dead.

I was Incredibly lucky. Transom died from a ground-arc. It was one of the
most terrifying stupid things I've ever done. Jeff (the moron) obviously
never touched one of our coils again, he was also immediately kicked out of
the Group, and from Geekhouse. I haven't talked to him in years.

The Geek Group has since improved our coil setup procedures, an event like
that is now absolutly impossible, and I'm a LOT more finaky on who I'll let
on a control console for ANYTHING. If I'm tuning, the only one I'll let on
the board is Mark. Partly because not only is he my best friend in the
world, he's also second-in-command of The Group and he knows that if he
kills me, he's stuck running the show ;)

We obviously don't publish such a huge screwup very much. But here, it's
important for people to know that mistakes DO happen. This wasn't an
accident, this was intentional, Jeff did it deliberately as a stupid joke,
and very easily could have cost someone a life for his stunt. I'm very
grateful that I'm not the 4th coiling fatality.

For those of you that do that sparks to the fingers stuff with small coils,
it felt NOTHING like that. I've taken hits from 6" arcs on Steve's coils.
They prick a little, this HURT ALL OVER. Don't try it at home.
