Seems like if you run the wire up thru a support you would have to put a 
hole in the glass plate somewhere which would be a problem with insulation 
breakdown in the vicinity of the hole.... which would lead to streamers in 
that area only...

one question I have is ...   does the plate(s) have to be a round 
plate??  can it be a ring?  thus leaving the center portion free from the 
effects of possible strikes... and amplifying the effect to the ring 
perimeter?   and what about glass tubes used as the upright supports 
between the upper and lower plates?  ( for that more clear look ) ...
