One could use a carbon rod as a trigger electrode.  Carbon rods aren't the
ideal thing for a TC gap for the following reasons:
1) Series resistance of the carbon
2) What makes them good for arc lights: the glowing, incandescent carbon,
makes them bad for precision spark gaps.  Once they get hot, they don't want
to quench
3) They erode, changing the gap and the operating characteristics.
