initial tuning of NST powered coils

You need to be sure you have enough turns (always use extra) on the primary
"test coil" to be sure you can hit resonance before you increase the power
beyond 20% on your variac. Turning the variac up if you are out of tune
will usually generate standing wave kickbacks that will blow a neon xmfr.

Also, what are you using for protection between the xmfrs and the caps?
Anything?

Keep the power low, tune with 25-30 turns of scrap wire, and then when
everything is properly tuned replace the primary with your "gold standard"
copper tubing or edge copper ribbon and crank up the power.

As soon as you have it tuned, then experiment with different elevations of
the sec. coil above pri. to see which area gives the best spark. This is
one step many experimenters ignore and it puts extra stress on the NST and
caps.

NST's are rather delicate and you can not abuse them in any way or they will
die.
