That's the usual mode of failure.

I've done it a half-dozen times.

Not really. It would be like saving fingernail clippings and gluing them 
together to make a secondary coilform. The wire is exceedingly fine and the 
trouble in getting it off intact, and respooled would be considerable. WAY 
more trouble than it's worth.

No idea for sure, but it's wicked small, way smaller than secondary TC 
wire. Remember, NST's only have to pass 60mA :) I'd say it like 40AWG or so 
perhaps? It's like HAIR!
