A magnifier is a Tesla coil that has three coils instead of two. The
primary and secondary are like in a normal Tesla coil, but the secondary is
(usually) shorter and fatter. The top of the secondary connects to the
bottom of a third coil, the extra coil, that normally sits on a stand a
couple of feet away. The sparks come off the top of this one.
It's not clear whether magnifiers are more efficient than normal Tesla
coils, but they are more difficult to design, so you get extra kudos for
building one ;)
